Quick Guide to Torrent Privacy with UTorrent

I am always getting asked on how to set up a torrent client (such as UTorrent) to ensure greater privacy.

Therefore, this is a simple how to for my friends so I don’t need to keep doing it for them.

  1. Go to http://www.proxy-list.org
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the page and complete the captcha.
  3. Scroll back to the bottom of page and under the heading ‘Working proxy list’ there should be a list of proxy ip address and ports
  4. Look for proxy with a type ‘Anon’ or ‘Elite’ with an uptime of ’100%’ – DO NOT USE A PROXY WITH TYPE ‘ Transparent’ or ‘Trans.’
  5. Copy the ip address only,  ie. – It should look like 255.55.55.55:8080, copy 255.55.55.55 only (up to the : )
  6. Open UTorrent and Select ‘Options’ from the top menu bar and then click preferences.
  7. On the left hand menu on the preferences screen select ‘Connections’
  8. Under proxy server, ensure the type is set to ‘HTTP’.
  9. Enter the IP address into the IP Address field in the proxy settings.
  10. Go back to the page you got the IP address from and get the port number attached to the IP address ,  ie. – It should look like 255.55.55.55:8080, copy 8080 only (from : onwards )
  11. Enter the port # into the Port number field in the proxy settings.
  12. Check the box for ‘Resolve host names through proxy’.
  13. Check the box for the ‘Use Proxy server for peer-to peer-connections’.
  14. Click ‘Apply’

You are now running your torrent traffic through an anonymous proxy which is now hopefully masking your true IP address from the other downloaders (but not the proxy itseld).

Tips:

  • You don’t need to use the proxy list I provided. A quick search for ‘proxy lists’ on google should being back quite a lot of results so if your proxy is slow then don’t be worried about changing proxies until you find one with some decent speed.
  • Added protection can be also found be selecting proxies from countries that have poor diplomatic relationships with their international counterparts.

Update:

I have finally got around to adding another article which covers IP Filtering with uTorrent which you should check out if you are interested in further increasing your privacy online.
