IP Filtering with UTorrent

After I realised that a lot of my friends actually read and used the steps I provided in my original article “Quick Guide to Torrent Privacy with UTorrent“ I have decided to put together a second article focused towards implementing and installing an IP Filtering list into UTorrent.
Why IP Filtering?
IP Filtering is another smart addition to the toolbox for increasing your privacy online when downloading torrents as most of these lists generally contain the IP’s of known devices that have been determined to be actively or historically working towards to identifying downloaders .
Its simple to install, free and it can save you a lot of time and bandwidth by ensuring you don’t connect to computers that serve corrupted or misleading files… or even worst, a copyright infringement notice.
Here are the instructions to follow.
- Go to http://blocklistpro.com/download-center/ip-filters/
- Download a file called ‘nipfilter.dat.gz’
- Once downloaded, extract and rename the from “nipfilter.dat” to “ipfilter.dat”
- Next, open Start > Run and copy “%AppData%” into the textbox and click ‘Ok’
- A list of folders should then appear. Select the folder called “uTorrent” of similar
- With this uTorrent folder now selected, copy the “ipfilter.dat” file from step 3 into this folder
- Start uTorrent and select Options > Preferences > Advanced
- Ensure ipfilter.enable is set to “true”. If not update using the checkboxes provided
- Click ‘Ok’ to close the Options window.
With these steps complete you can now verify the filter is working by selecting the logging tab in uTorrent and ensuring you see a entry similar to the following
[2011-04-13 19:42:13] Loaded ipfilter.dat (249785 entries)
That’s it, you are now stopping connections to known IP addresses of anti-piracy outfits.
Tips:
- These lists can be updated regularly so ensure you check back every couple of weeks to make sure your list is up to date.
